The benefits of journaling with essential oils

Journaling in 2023 seems like quite the trend, don’t you think?

But did you know Journaling is not a modern phenomenon; there are recordings traced back to 55AD China. During the Renaissance period, the Western world began journaling regularly and the diary, began to have some literary value as the importance of the individual began to come to the fore.

Today, in a very busy, noisy and stressful world, journaling, along with adding simple aromatherapy, has become an important, affordable, passive wellness tool for those who need a private, creative outlet.

Physical and mental health benefits of consistent journaling:

  • Improves Mental Health

  • Encourages Self-Confidence

  • Boosts Emotional Intelligence

  • Helps with Achieving Goals

  • Inspires Creativity

  • Boosts Memory

  • Enhances Critical Thinking Skills

  • Heightens Academic Performance

Who benefits from journaling?

  • empaths and overthinkers

  • creative types

  • people dealing with trauma or difficult family members

  • people who have troubles focusing

  • individuals who have troubles sleeping at night

  • people who need focus

Basically, everyone can benefit from writing therapy, of some sort.

What are the best ways to journal?

We are all different, so the way in which we write, or draw will vary. The most important thing when starting a writing/journal practice is:

Consistency + Intention + Enjoyment

Keeping things simple and attainable will also create a long term, healthy habit.

Here is a list of the very different types of journaling:

  • Bullet journaling

  • Brain dumping

  • Morning Pages

  • Daily gratitude

  • Art journal

  • Prompts

  • Dream journaling

  • Fitness journaling

  • Free writing

  • Mood journals

  • List making

Once you decide to start a practice, you don’t need anything fancy, or to go out and purchase an expensive journal. Personally, I use journal prompts, a large note book from HomeSense and colorful pens.

Some people love digital journaling as well and there are many apps and online tools. So, here are 3 digital tools, as well as 3 fun journaling books, (just to give you an idea as to what’s out there):

How can you add aromatherapy to support and enhance your journaling?

  1. Diffuse

  2. Inhale from an aromatherapy inhaler

  3. Add a drop to your hand, inhale

Aromatherapy and essential oils are also a very personal practice as well. One aroma may bring in happy, relaxing feelings in one person, while the response of another may be uncomfortable and undesirable.

Here are 4 blends and 3 single oils to try the next time you write:

  • Balance (creates a calming, quieting and grounding environment,)

  • Serenity (Promotes a peaceful environment with its calming, relaxing scent)

  • Adaptiv (A reassuring blend when stress and tension is high)

  • Supermint ( an invigorating and energizing aroma, creating an uplifting environment that’s ideal for mental focus and enhanced stamina)

  • Rosemary (encourages expansion of the mind, and supports individuals in receiving new information and experiences, promotes mental clarity)

  • Lemon (known as “bottled sunshine”, its crisp, citrusy aroma creates a bright and uplifting atmosphere, also engages the mind and aids concentration)

  • Wild Orange (energizing and uplifting, Wild Orange inspires abundance, fosters creativity and supports a positive mood)

Love ya!
