Mindful Aromatherapy with Kellie Timmins

Hey, I’m Kellie…yoga teacher and certified aromatherapist 😊

My love, (you could say ‘obsession’ 😂), for essential oils began over 30 years ago when I picked up my first bottle of tea tree oil, complete with a little guidebook from the local health food store, I still treasure. That moment sparked a lifelong passion. I quickly realized these “plant essences” could rival synthetic remedies, and they’ve been a cornerstone of my life ever since.

As a dedicated yoga teacher, I’ve woven essential oils into my home routines for everything from cleaning to relaxation, and into my classes to deepen the mind-body connection. Over time, my curiosity led me to become an aromatherapist, (I studied and graduated from Aromahead Institute), not out of necessity, but to confidently share their benefits with my students and community. Whether it’s calming lavender during a restorative pose or invigorating peppermint for an energizing flow, oils have transformed my practice and teaching.

MY PERSPECTIVE ON ESSENTIAL OILS

(a more balanced approach than what you may currently find online)

I believe in using only the purest essential oils to support a holistic, intentional lifestyle, on and off the mat. The oils I share with friends, family and my students are ones I personally use in my home and in my yoga business.

When choosing your oils, and the which company to purchase from…purity matters, especially when we’re breathing oils in deeply, using them on our skin, and sharing them with our yoga students.

One of the most common questions I get is, “What is the best essential oil company?”

The answer? There are a few really great companies. Whatever company you choose, just be sure they follow these guidelines:

What should you look for when choosing a specific essential oil brand?

    • Look for oils that are 100% pure with no synthetic additives, fillers, or carrier oils unless clearly labeled.

    • Check that the label states pure essential oil and the Latin (botanical) name.

    • Reputable companies provide transparency through third-party lab testing.

    • Look for testing such as GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) to verify chemical makeup.

    • Choose companies that use sustainable harvesting practices and pay fair wages to growers.

    • Support brands that partner with farmers and respect the ecosystems where oils are sourced.

  • A good brand lists the Latin name, plant part used (e.g., leaf, bark), extraction method (steam distilled, cold pressed), and country of origin.

    • High-quality companies often make batch-specific test results available online or upon request.
This shows their commitment to consistency and transparency.

  • Avoid brands that include "fragrance," "parfum," or unclear ingredient listings. Essential oils should not smell overly sweet or perfume-like.

    • Trusted companies offer education, safety information, and proper usage guidelines.

    • They are often recommended by certified aromatherapists and holistic professionals.

    • Oils should come in dark glass bottles (usually amber or cobalt) to protect against UV light.

    • Look for tightly sealed caps and proper labeling.

Recommendations 😊

Over the years, my approach to essential oils has naturally shifted. I started with doTERRA and still use some of their blends and wellness products, but recently I’ve been exploring oils from smaller Canadian companies that feel more in line with how I use oils today. Brands like Fern & Petal, Rae Dunphy, and Healing Hollow stand out for their quality, transparency, and simple, honest approach. These are the kinds of oils I now reach for in my own yoga practice and self-care routines.

The 3 essential oils companies from the US I highly recommend: doTERRA, Aromatics International and Rocky Mountain Oils.

On my recipes page and through some of my aromatherapy offerings, I share practical ways to bring essential oils into your home or yoga business. I invite you to sign up for my newsletter for regular inspiration and helpful resources.

“75% of the emotions we generate on a daily basis are affected by smell. Next to sight, it is the most important sense we have.”

-Martin Lindstrom

• Of all our senses, our sense of smell is our most primal. None of our other senses has such a direct effect on our minds and bodies.-Dr. Quing Li.

Kind words from some of my essential oil clients from over the years.

“Working with Kellie over the years has been incredible. She is patient, generous and is so fast at getting back to me when I have questions about oils for my family.” -TM, Grande Prairie, Alberta

“Kellie has a true gift for creating oil experiences that go beyond just the sense of smell. Love to learn?

Start here!

I believe educational tools, especially learning about oils should be accessible (& affordable) to everyone. The one problem is…there is so much out there, where do you start?

I would start right here:

  1. doTERRA’s FREE eo safety course. Note: there is NO membership sign up needed, just your email address and name to sign into the course. Go at your own pace. Mark your progress.

  2. My own beginner e-book. I created this as a challenge that ran over 30 days. I highlight MY favourite, top 9 oils and how to use them over a month. There are shopping lists, safety tips and oil overviews as well. You can purchase it in my store, (it’s free for my doTERRA wholesale customers).

  3. Aromatics International Learning Guides. Here, you will find comprehensive resources to advance your essential oil knowledge and blending skills, (this is the company my aromatherapy school, Aromahead. is aligned with and where I sometimes purchase oils from).
